Smart Water Conservancy Paves the Way for the Future: Students from the Department of Hydraulic Engineering Visited the Pearl River Water Conservancy Scientific Experimental Base
time: 2024-11-15

In response to the national call to promote the development of smart water conservancy and to cultivate more high-quality water conservancy talents for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, on November 13, 2024, Professor Cheng Xiangju, the head of Department of Hydraulic Engineering, and Associate Professor Zhu Dantong organized students from the Class of 2022 in Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering to visit the Pearl River Water Conservancy Scientific Experimental Base, a national science popularization education base, operated by the Pearl River Water Resources Research Institute.

On the day of the event, guided enthusiastically by the tour guide, teachers and students visited several venues, including the Hydraulic Engineering Experiment Hall, the Pearl River Estuary Model Experiment Hall, the Pearl River Water Conservancy Scientific and Technological Innovation Exhibition Hall, and the Xijiang River Ecological Simulation Experiment Hall. Each venue, with its unique charm and rich content, presented a wonderful world of water conservancy science and technology to the visitors.

In the Pearl River Estuary Model Experiment Hall, teachers and students were deeply impressed by the magnificent overall tidal physical model of the Pearl River Estuary. This model is not only one of the largest and most complex tidal estuary models in the world but also a powerful tool for studying flood control, tide prevention, saltwater intrusion prevention, water environment management, ecological environment protection, estuary evolution, and sediment transport in large water-related projects in the Pearl River Estuary. Through the precise replication of the model, teachers and students were able to tour the Pearl River Basin in a short time and appreciate the grandeur of major projects such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link.

Subsequently, teachers and students visited the Pearl River Water Conservancy Scientific and Technological Innovation Exhibition Hall. Here, not only was the development direction of water conservancy in the Pearl River Basin displayed, but also key research achievements in recent years were presented, including modules on smart water conservancy, water environment management, water ecological restoration, water resource planning and management, and flood and waterlogging disaster prevention. These displays allowed students to experience the charm and power of water conservancy science and technology up close and inspired their infinite enthusiasm for innovative research in water conservancy. On the second floor of the exhibition hall, hundreds of precious biological specimens were displayed, showcasing the rich water ecological environment of the Pearl River Basin and making teachers and students realize the importance of protecting water resources and maintaining the ecological environment.

This practical activity not only deepened students' understanding and knowledge of water conservancy science and technology but also sparked their enthusiasm and determination to contribute to the water conservancy cause. In the future, they will contribute their efforts to the construction of smart water conservancy with greater enthusiasm and firm belief, jointly writing a new chapter in the water conservancy cause of the Greater Bay Area.
