Guangzhou receives an average of 1800 mm of rain per year, whilst the total rainfall for May of this year was an astonishing 805.mm, breaking the 40-year record set in May 1975. To put it into perspective, the total rainfall in May was equivalent to nearly half of Guangzhou’s annual rainfall.
Guangdong enters its flood season from May every year with large-scale heavy precipitation and thunderstorms, which results from the convergence of cold air from North China and warm humid air from South China. The weather of Guangzhou changes on a whim. It is sunny in the morning, but the moment noon strikes there are rain clouds looming in the sky and a rainstorm follows. The heavy rain that falls around May fifth of the lunar calendar is called Dragon Boat Water, as the Dragon Boat Festival arrives on this day.
The Dragon Boat Water continues from May 21st to June 20th, and due to the influence of El Nino in the equatorial Pacific, Guangdong will still witness intense rainfall in the near term. It is predicted that a typhoon will land in Guangdong around late June. The main precipitation periods in June are expected to cover:
· June 9 – June 13 (Moderate to heavy rain)
· June 15 –June 16 (Moderate to heavy rain, with regional torrential rain)
· June 21 – June 24 (Heavy to torrential rain)
· June 27– June 30 (Heavy with regional torrential rain)
If you are planning a trip, please be prepared for possible flight delays and avoid places which have a high risk of landsides or other natural disasters.
