Speaker Introduction:

Professor Smith comes to South China University of Technology as an English language teacher. He is most pleased to be your guest and hopes that his time here will be beneficial to his delightful, earnest students, as well as for all those that he encounters here in this grand city of Guangzhou. Dr.Smith has been the husband of Anita Smith for the past 45 years. They have 4 children, now all grown 2 boys and 2 girls so that each one has a brother and a sister. Three live with them in Hawaii but one daughter lives far away. Dr.Smith graduated twice from the University of California, the second time with a Master’s Degree in engineering. He also holds a Ph.D. in International Business from Kennedy-Western University, and a teaching degree from the University of Hawaii. Not long ago our speaker retired from a career as a U.S. diplomat. In that capacity he traveled to half the countries of the world and worked for extended periods in Bangladesh, Honduras, Panama, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Germany and Armenia in the design and implementation of the U.S. economic assistance program. Dr.Smith speaks Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Bengali and some German. On occasion does language interpreting in the courts and community. In a prior career Dr.Smith worked as a Structural Engineer heavily involved in the writing of earthquake regulations. As a member of a team of investigators, he visited the sites of several major earthquakes to learn how to improve such regulations. In another prior career he represented the American Steel Industry to all governmental bodies throughout the Western U.S. in the writing of construction regulations. In keeping with the occasion, the observance of Thanksgiving in America, Dr. Smith wants you to know that he is thankful for all things, for his Maker, for his life, for his family and the opportunity he has been given to be here with you.
