On October 17, the provincial science and technology conference was held in Guangzhou, attended by the Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, Huang Kunming, who delivered a speech, and Deputy Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and and the Governor of the Guangdong Province, Wang Weizhong, who chaired the meeting. The conference awarded the 2023 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Awards, with 32 achievements (individuals) from our school receiving awards, setting a new record. The total number of awards, first prizes for the Natural Science Award, and the number of recipients for the Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award were all ranked the first place in the province. President Tang Hongwu, Vice President Wu Bo, and several award representatives were invited to attend the conference. Among them, Professor Chen Yan from our school was honored with the Guangdong Provincial Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award, marking the first time our school has received this award.
The Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award is a new award established under the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Awards in 2022, aimed at recognizing young researchers who have made significant scientific discoveries in scientific research or achieved innovative breakthroughs in the development of key core technologies. This honor is awarded to only 20 individuals statewide.
Chen Yan, a professor, Ph.D. supervisor, and vice dean of the School of Environment and Energy of South China University of Technology. She obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees from Peking University and her Ph.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, where she also conducted postdoctoral research. In response to the significant demands for coordinated carbon reduction and pollution control in China, she is dedicated to the resource utilization of environmental pollutants/waste materials. Over the past five years, she has published more than 40 academic papers as the corresponding author in renowned academic journals such as Nat. Commun (3), Angew. Chem. Int. ed., Energ. Environ. Sci. (2), and Appl. Catal. B, and has been granted more than 10 national invention patents. She has received various awards, including the “Young Scientist Award” from the International Solid State Ionics Society. She has guided students to win gold medals in the China International College Students Innovation Competition and second prizes in the “Challenge Cup” national competition. She has hosted research projects such as the National Key Research and Development Program Young Scientist Project/intergovernmental international science and technology innovation cooperation projects and the general project of the National Natural Science Foundation. She was selected for talent projects including the Overseas High-Level Talent Introduction Plan Young Project and the Guangdong Province Young Top Talents. She has been invited to give over 10 keynote/invited lectures at well-known international academic conferences and holds academic positions such as the council member of the Solid State Ionics Branch of the Chinese Silicate Society, the vice chair of the Electron Beam and Ion Beam Committee of the China Electrotechnical Society, the head of the Resources and Environment Working Group of the Guiding Committee of the Southern Advanced Light Source,an advisory board member of Energy & Fuels, and a guest editor for Front. Chem.
