From October 12 to 15, the finals of the 2024 China International College Students Innovation Competition, co-hosted by the Ministry of Education, the United Front Work Department of CPC Central Committee, the Cyberspace Administration of China, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the National Intellectual Property Administration, the National Administration for Rural Revitalization, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, and the Shanghai Municipal Government, were held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The competition attracted 5,140,000 projects from 5,406 Universities across 153 countries and regions, with 20.836 million registrants, and ultimately, 1,410 projects entered the national finals. South China University of Technology won 6 gold and 4 silver medals in this competition, ranking the first in the number of gold awards among universities in the Guangdong Province.

Among them, the project "Controlling Pollution and Purifying Land—A Pioneer in Integrated Management of Heavy Metal Pollution in Mining Areas", guided by Professor Lu Guining, Professor Dang Zhi, and Ms. Wu Honghui from the School of Environment and Energy and led by Fu Qixian, won the national gold award, marking a historic breakthrough for the school in winning gold in the Youth Red Dream Building Journey track of the competition!

At the finals, the Controlling Pollution and Purifying Land team competed alongside projects from various universities nationwide, showcasing their unique strengths. The project team, primarily composed of undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. students in environmental science and engineering, gathered interdisciplinary students from science, engineering, agriculture, and business to tackle the issue of "remediation and pollution occurring simultaneously" in metal mining areas and their downstream environments. Based on extensive research conducted across numerous mining areas in more than ten provinces in the country, the team proposed an innovative "source control - process interruption - end-point remediation" integrated management plan tailored to the practical difficulties faced by mining areas. They developed technologies such as self-repairing tailing passivation films, low-cost rapid purification techniques for irrigation water, and magnetic removal technology for heavy metals in farmland soils, systematically addressing the challenges of heavy metal pollution management in mining areas, contributing to the improvement of the ecological environment of mining areas, and achieving a dual enhancement of agricultural product yield and quality. The project supports high-quality development in green mining areas, driving ecological civilization construction and empowering rural revitalization with new productive forces!

Team members actively prepare for the competition

It is reported that the project leader, master's student Fu Qixian, and key team members are from the first Party branch of graduate students at the Soil Research Institute of the School of Environment and Energy. The branch implements the spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party, fully exerting the leading role of Party building by closely integrating Party building work with students' research and competition, cultivating high-quality talents with innovative spirit and practical ability. In recent years, the School of Environment and Energy has further increased its efforts in student innovation and entrepreneurship training, focusing on nurturing outstanding innovative talents who dare to explore and create.
