n response to the call of the China Cares for the Next Generation Working Committee (hereinafter referred to as Working Committee) of the Ministry of Education to continue to carry out the activity of Understanding China in colleges and universities across the country in 2022, give full play to the spiritual leading role of the five elders and encourage young students to contribute to their youth in the new era and new journey, the branch of the Working Committee of the School of Environment and Energy organized an interview about the five elders in B1102 of the teaching and engineering activity center on the morning of May 22, 2022. The interviewee was Professor Lu Shaoming, a retired professor of the School of Environment and Energy. A total of 16 young students also participated in the activity.

During the interview, Mr. Lu shared with young students on the themes of taking the road of life and giving full play to ones own strengths, integrating scientific research with engineering, “strengthening mental ability under pressure and being tenacious to succeed and college life needs hard work and rational career choice. He patiently and unreservedly answered the questions of the young students, and talked about the disruptive changes in China before and after the reform and opening up, the opportunity to join the party, how to make a good social life plan, and how to accurately grasp the direction of life.

In the general direction of life, Mr. Lu said that we should take our own life path and give full play to our own strengths. We should not solely talk about success based on educational background, but take social identity as our own standard. He used his early life experience as an example to teach his classmates life experience by telling them reason and moving them with emotion. Admit your ordinary, affirm your extraordinary. Sharpen your true self in the ordinary, and show your talents in the places you are good at.

In terms of scientific research, Mr. Lu took his own scientific research path as an example to teach how to integrate science and engineering. He said that on the one hand, innovation can only be achieved through scientific research; on the other hand, scientific truth should be tested in the project to achieve social benefits. Students are encouraged to test the truth in practice, apply science in engineering, realize the value of life in practical work, and make greater contributions to the development of the new era.

In terms of the spirit that young students should have, Mr. Lu emphasized that they should have the indomitable spirit. He said that all the achievements are derived from failure, and we should dare to tackle tough problems. He encouraged everyone that failure is the test of self. To this end, Mr. Lu specially shared his successful experience in overcoming difficulties in the cause of rural water quality improvement.

At the end of the interview, Mr. Lu conveyed a deep message to the young students: first, we should treat things in a normal way and be ordinary people; Second, we should be tenacious and not too fragile; Third, we should have perseverance, never give up, and finally usher in a bright future.

With his own personal experience, Mr. Lu showed the young students the responsibility of a member of the Communist Party of China in continuously improving himself, pursuing self-worth and selfless dedication in the process of meeting the needs of social and national construction.
